Batwoman #1

Batwoman #1 is the first comic I’ve picked up in single issue form since Serenity: Hope Floats. The artwork by J.H. Williams with colors by Dave Stewart are beautiful and a noirish story just makes this so good, and a nice drug for my superhero fix. I previewed some of the other DC relaunch books and most of them felt amateurish, or trending young. I’m glad this book was in preproduction before the decision to relaunch was made. It has a self contained story, and bleeds style, and almost feels like a vertigo book. I’ll keep picking it up as long as this team is on the book. A plus.

Pirate Football.

ECU Football
“It’s pride. It’s tradition. It’s passion. It’s a group facing adversity, looking it square in the eye, hitting it right in the jaw and saying, ‘Bring it on. Want some and get some.’ ” – Ruffin Mcneil

I know most of you don’t care about College Football. Well its something pretty important to me. As I get ready to make my 1st of 6 trips this fall to Greenville, NC for East Carolina Football that quote above from our current coach reflects a lot of my feelings for the boys in Purple n Gold. So many people I know from my days at East Carolina have overcome many obstacles, and now are starting to get the benefits from that hard work. And so many people still tell us what we can’t do. Say what you will about East Carolina, but I think it instills a desire for more in everyone who attends and pays attention. It’s my school and I’ll forever be thankful for it. And we are Pirates. In more ways then one.

The other most important part of the trip for me is family. Both of my parents went there and its the one time of year I’m sure to spend time with my dad and my brother. As we all live so many different lives right now, and after years of Northeast and Midwest exile for me, its really great just to walk in the tailgate fields with them, experience the atmosphere, and know that we will share the same memories of last minute wins, and even terrible losses years from now. But we will share them together.
So tonight, I’m putting my flags on the car windows and driving 5 1/2 hours to Greenville, NC. Its a city I’m not overly fond of, but a school that shaped me into parts of what I am today. Go Pirates! PURPLE!

Dragoncon!

Well I finally made it to a day of Dragoncon and although it’s a little large for me, I think I’ve drunk the kool-aid and can’t wait to go back next year. I doubt we will ever vend at the show as it just seems a little overwhelming, but maybe after we get another year under our belts of just figuring out the layout of where everything is. I mean we only made it to 4 of the 5 hotels yesterday and of those we still only saw certain areas of the convention. Not that, that is a bad thing.
Spent most of the morning just wandering between hotels checking out the Walk of Fame and two of the three dealers rooms before heading into line to see William Shatner. I had seen him before but I was glad to get to hear him talk one more time. After Shatner we went to my favorite part of the show, the comics artist alley. Many great talents in that room and so much great stuff to look at. Went to the art show and I was excited when we ran into artist Todd Lockwoods table. He does the covers for the Drizzt series of books by R.A. Salvatore, my favorite fantasy series. I got a nice print of the cover of The Lone Drow all ready for framing.

We then headed to the Sheraton to catch the Ghost Hunters panel. It was funny and just another great experience of the day. After that we met up with a friend who lives in Atlanta for a chinese duck feast at Hsu’s a pricey but good Chinese place a block from the con.
Saying our goodbyes we ran back to the Marriot to catch the Battlestar Galactica cast in a q and a that ended with Edward Olmos leading the crowd in a loud SO SAY WE ALL Scream. Perfect way to end the day but we had one more mission in mind. We rode the awesome elevators all 43 floors to the top and got a great but a little high for me view of the Marriott.
All in all a great day and worth the crazy driving it took to get there. Next year we will be back, and can’t wait to add more days to our entertainment.

Creature Watch #5

This is a paper watch that actually works. I’ve decorated it with some of my creatures. Watch is made of thick paper so I wouldn’t wear it in the rain, but you’ll be the only one in the world with this design on a watch. Be the cool kid on the block. Fits most adult wrists. Available at Etsy
