WTH Con Review

So I spent my Saturday on the campus of Guilford College at the wonderful What The Hell? Con. Let me first get something out of the way. This is a free convention. FREE! And the thing that gets me about it is theres another regional convention that charges money, that is way less organzied, and in comparison offers less. So great job WTHcon, you put on a great show.

The convention takes place between two buldings. It reminds me alot of Conbust at Smith College in Mass. Most of the space is classroom space, repurposed for the convention. In Duke the first floor is for the dealers, who carried a good amount of stuff. The second floor has lots of games rooms for the rpgers. If you like Role Playing, then most likely there was a game for you there. There is also a Anime room, which had good crowds most of the day, and something unique to WTH con for me was the Bad Movies Room. I stopped there a few times throughout the weekend and it was really really bad. It takes a hardy person to find these films i’m sure.
The third floor has two videogame rooms and more programming space.
Across the way in Dana was the auditorium where MC Frontalot had his concert and where the Artist Alley was. These artist, many of them from the webcomic world were all amazing, and I’m gonna try to join them next year.

I had to leave during the MC Frontalot concert so I could make the drive back to Asheville, but left with a very enjoyable day of conventioning behind me. Great job to the students and volunteers who put on WTH Con.

Peas 186

Peas 186 where they play the Bulletstorm demo.
Bulletstorm is a game I should love. Its by the makers of Gears of War. It’s set in a futuristic and westerned tinged world. There are some pretty amazing spots in the short demo. But mostly the game left me feeling at best, a little immature, and at worst, not interested at all. And I’m afraid its not just me getting to old to ‘get’ it this time. They went for funny, and came out late 90’s Jim Carrey. Slightly annoying.

Placebo Part 14:

I’m back in Rahkim’s lair sooner than I want to be. He’s sitting in his office smoking some oversized cigar. The air reeks of bad perfume and hairspray. I think I smell disinfectant as well, and I’m sure I don’t want to know where it’s coming from.
“What’s up?” I try to have some energy for this, but in truth, I’m physically wasted.
“Hey Jackson,” Rahkim barely looks up. “I thought I should call you.”
He motions to one of his thugs who heads into the other room. After a moment of silence, the thug returns holding Daisy by one of her thin, slender arms.
She is squirming to get free until she sees me. Her eyes freeze then, just for a second, and then she stops completely, her head down.
“Your wife..”
“Ex-wife.”
“Right. Whatever. Anyway, Daisy here came by looking to score,” Rahkim says with little emotion.
I shoot her a look of anger, but it’s tinged with pity. “I assumed with our history Jackson, the proper thing to do was give you a call. Let you handle it.”
Wonderful. Now I’m in Rahkim’s debt again, and for what? An ex-wife who just can’t help herself?
“Thank you Rahkim.” Daisy is now by my side. I grab her to go before Rahkims’ voice stops me.
“One more thing Jackson. You know a Sparrow Sprite?”
I turn back to him quickly.
“Who?”
“I don’t know. Tommy Lee’s goons were asking around about her. A bird told me you might know something.”
I stare at Rahkim for a few seconds trying to see what cards he’s holding. I take a chance.
“Nope. Can’t say I know her. Thanks for taking care of Daisy. Again.”
He nods, and I get the hell out of there, my head screaming with how deep this is getting.

con-news

Wondering why my twitter feed has more links to con-news than it once did? Well, I recently had an offer that would have effectively ended the little web project of con-news that I started in 2007. And I couldn’t do it. Coming out of that, my fire is fueled to making the site even better. One of the ways to do that is an expanded readership. And so twitter comes into play. I thought about starting a new twitter feed for con-news, but then thought against it. I am con-news. Its part of the crazy world of luckycreature.com, and I am its main voice. So it goes with me, as do all these projects of Peas, my creatures, my stories, and before them, the records and zines. The below is what I wrote to the con-news readership just now. As always, thanks for the journey.

“Just wanted to thank Con-news readers since I haven’t done so in a while. For those of you who have been around since we started this in 2007, you’ve seen lots of changes, and I hope lots of improvements.
Some behind the scenes things happening have made me again realize how much I love the convention going community and how much I enjoy being your daily spot for convention news. But I want to do it better than ever for you. From now on if we have a new post, I will make it known on my twitter. I also want to thank Petrea Mitchell who has donated her time since near the beggining covering news and reporting from the west coast. As always you can always send me your reports to luckycreaturelabel@gmail.com and make sure your local conventions know about us, and to get us their news. Together we can make our fandoms accesible and continue con-news.com for everyone who goes to conventions! Thank YOU!”
