sf media tie in comics week

Star Trek The Next Generation The Space Between #1 0f 6 IDW publishing. The first Star Trek Comic released in years comes from IDW on this the 20th anniversary of the Next Generation. The story feels very TNG and the only complaint i can have is that it’s set during the 1st year. I’d prefer to explore things that took place after the movies, to further the story but I can see how that could just be wishful thinking. The story has some good elements and the art is pretty good. All in all it’s Star Trek in the four color boxes again and I’m definetly o.k. with that. b plus

BattleStar Galactica #5 Dynamite Publishing. More on the old cyclons and the returners and a setup for a pretty cool Sharon Valeri fight with herself. It’s not really for anyone other than fans of the show and held to the shows’ high standards it unfortunately can’t compete. b-

axm 19, loveless 14, bsg 4, bsg zarek #1

big comics day for me.
Astonishing gets all spacey and Mr Whedon and Mr Cassidy deliver again. not as fun as the past couple of issues but still the best book of the week.

Loveless 14 More vengence. great colors. dont know where this comic can go though.

battlestar galactica # 4 interesting story. like where the cylon thinks baltar is a cylon, which he may or may not be.

bsg zarek, a miniseries on richard hatch’s characther from the new show. pretty good backstory.

acme novelty library # 17, apocalypto reviews.

Chris Ware’s Acme Novelty Library continues to look good. He has redefined the graphic format and no one can argue that his look is defined and he is one of if not the best artists working in the field today. His storytelling is also precise but at 17 dollars a pop, I can’t help but feel cheated by this book and this artist. Why are we dwelling in the mundane in this book? Why does it take a whole graphic novel to say that the life of our main figures sucks? Especially when you’ve pretty much said all this before in your last 16 issues. Where Adrian Tomine’s Optic Nerve doesn’t have the visual flair of Ware’s work (no color actually works in his favor) his characters actually do something. And they represent full pieces. I get the feeling Ware has created these caricatures( the girl who may be pregnant, the dorky kid, himself as a pot smoking art teacher) but hasn’t taken the time to understand why they exist in the greater story. This probably won’t matter since at about a issue a year Ware will be dead before we find out if Chalky even gets pass one year at school. And then theres the second set of stories about bees. Doing absolutely nothing. Again. But they sure look pretty. Chris Ware may be the greatest living cartoonist working. Wish he would prove it. C

Funny, just saw Mel Gibson’s Apocolypto and it’s left me very strangely. The first hour and a half, is well some of the most unique filmmaking of the year and then it just ends so wrongly. Rudy Youngblood is sure to be a star after this. The chase scenes are some of the best in cinema history, and the exotic nature of the temple settings hasn’t been seen in such massive quantity since the late eighties. Gibson knows how to do his violence and the movie looks very good. I just wish they didn’t feel the need to compromise with that ending. It is an amazing feat to have any subtilted film playing at the mall movieplexes of the world these days and to bring one of this quality to the big screen should be commended. Overall it’s a fun ride, better than most of the action drivel of this last summer, but not perfect. Enjoyable Bplus.

big questions #9

Nillsen’s Big Question series is one of those comics where you just wonder who you should be rooting for? The crashed pilot, the birds, the snake? There a real work of either genius or comedic insanity at play here and I enjoy it very much. I can’t help but think as much as I love the comic medium, how cool this would be to see animated instead. It wouldn’t work and it wouldn’t be a cartoon but something tells me it would be very new and right.

Also got Loveless # 13 and just a crazy turnaround from the first twelve issues. If you just read the letter part of the story and then check out the last three pages, it could break your romantic heart. How did this book which has been so cruel and depraved turn the emotions around so quickly? Brian Azzarello proves his writing talent again.

Got the latest Acme Novelty Library last week will dive into it soon.

make mine marvel

Wow. three great books all under the marvel banner today. Civil War # 5 finally comes out and again it’s worth the wait. I can’t get enough of Mcniven’s artwork He takes costumes like Stingrays, that have always been cheesy and they just look awesome here. Doesn’t hurt that the story is great as well.

Astonishing X-men # 18. So this goes all the way back to Grant Morrison’s New X-men run doesn’t it. Got to love Joss Whedon. I may even buy Runaways when he starts on that.

Moon Knight#6 got to be my favorite this week. Lots of great dialogue and a great way to tie up the opening story arc. If Marvel can keep Huston and Finch on the book they can keep me.

All A’s across the board.

loveless # 12

Only one book this week. With a pretty wild finale at the end. I’m not sure what to make of the decision. Without ruining anything I can’t say much more but really where do we go from here.

On the label side of things, Mark Schwaber’s killing card cd, is tracking at number 70 played album on KALX, berkleys famous radio station. Pretty awesome stuff that is. Haven’t got it yet? head on over to the main store and see what your missing.

this day.

His World Her World # 7 is complete and will make it’s debut at the Bittersweetnessandlight table at the Madison Zine Fest in Madison Wi this saturday the 21st. After that it will start showing up in it’s regular places.

Three big movies this weekend. The Prestige looks to be the best, followed by Eastwood’s Flags of our Fathers, though I’m more interested in seeing his Letters from Iwo Jima in feburary, and Marie Antoinette from Lost in Translation’s Soffia Coppola.

One month till Wii day and also that overpriced but pretty PS3. then we will have to wait another five-six years for this kind of hype again.

My plan for the afternoon? I’m going to go pull out the Sega Genesis, play some championship ProAm, some X-men, and get ready for Lost tonight. What a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon.
