Thor

Went to see Thor today. I liked it. Not loved it. And the problem is that its a really good Thor movie. And the fault lies in that. Of all the Marvel heroes, we’ve seen on screen so far Thor is by far the most otherwordly. We have Spider-man, the NYC troubled teen. We have the X-men, also relateble teens. The Hulk represents our nuclear fears. Iron Man, our wartime and power corruption ones. With Thor, you have a fantasy, mythology, folklore. And you lose part of what those other stories have; human personality. Natalie Portman brings a lot to the screen time she is given, and her interactions with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) are some of the best parts of the movie, but alot of the film takes place in the beautiful and cgi painted Asgard. It’s well done, enjoyable, and a good action set. But something about it doesn’t grab me the way Tobey McGuire did when he swung through New York the first time, or when we first saw Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine at that bar in Canada.

That being said Asgard is great, and if you could make a “rainbow bridge’ cool, they did it here. The frost giants were neat, and above all Tom Hiddleston as Loki stole the show. I can not wait to see what they do with him in Avengers. Speaking of Avengers we get some neat sneaks into that movie throughout this film, and they really have built the expecations pretty high. I may skip work when that film opens next year.

If your looking for a good start to the Summer movie season, Thor is a good place to start. I just wish it felt a little more human.

Long Bio for May 2011

I write things, like this comic here and my continuing free e-fiction hosted on this blog, called Placebo posted weekly.

I paint creatures which you can buy on my etsy site. I also take commisions on paintings.

I do a little webcomic called Peas which I have put out every friday for over three years now. My latest project is with artist Jessica White. It’s a webcomic called Daytime Ghost Hunter. I’m very proud of it so far.

Placebo Part 27

“What is this Sparrow?”
I pull back, a little unprepared by his reaction.
“Just thanking you I guess.” Somehow he makes me feel open, like my armor isn’t up. “But its cool if your not into it.” I want to look away, think about telling him I need to get ready for the show, but he grabs my hands.
“No, I’m into it. Just, I don’t know…” And then he kisses me. It feels, I’m not sure, right? I don’t hesitate as I kiss him back. My life is a rolling confusion, but this, this can do no harm. I surrender to it, let it wash over me, and spend a few minutes just living.
When the knock comes from the door, I’m both disturbed and excited for the future.
“Mrs. Sprite, your own in a few,” yells the bar owner.
Guess its time for my last show.
I start to get dressed and running over these past few minutes in my head. And I know what is coming now. It scares me a little and I light a cigarette to calm my nerves.
“Want to watch from the side?”
It’s all I can give him, Jackson, this man who just happened to rescue me from the terrible decision I chose a few nights earlier. It’s all I can give him, and I dare not think what could have been if I met this man before Tommy Lee. It’s the kind of questions one never asks.
It’s showtime.

Lucky Creature around the web

His World/Her World # 9 got a review at Oh MY Clumsy Heart here. The same article can be found at The Syndicated Zine Reviews site.

Super excited to have my Hello Kitty and Godzilla paintings appear in the super awesome Kaiju comic Neo Monster Island on this page. Creator Sean McGuinness and his wife Shirley have been awesome supporters of my work, and I would love it if some of you would show them the same.

Send me your luckycreature links at luckycreaturelabel@gmail.com, I’d love to send some viewers your way.

Columbia

Had a good time at the Columbia Anime Con this weekend. Here’s the creatures I made,

Creature Vertigo. Final creature painting I made this weekend, will go on etsy soonish. It was time for the spiky hairs to return.

Saw five or six kids with this Naruto costume on, so why not. Etsy soon.

Did this Owlet for the artists next to us all weekend. It’s from their comic Super Zero High, their website is Mourning Daily if you want to check em out.

Mickey Mouse. In a suit.

Wood Man from Mega Man. Classic 8-bit wonder.

Gir & Zim. SOLD at the show. Thinking about doing a large Gir painting? Thoughts?

Had a great time in Columbia saturday night. Went to Heroes & Dragons comic store which is awesome. Got some needed Minimates, and then had the best Vietnamese Pork and Shrimp at Pho Viet in Columbia, SC.
I’ve been to Columbia twice in as many months, can’t wait to return again.

X-men: First Class.

When I first heard they were making this, I was pretty meh about it. The first trailer came out and I saw some good things, but this trailer right here kind of nails the feeling of early X-men perfectly. This will at least wash the taste of X3 and Wolverine out. I love the style choices being made, and really this has become the summer Marvel movie for me over Thor and Captain America. Can’t wait.
